Effect of EVM in the Assembly Elections of Tamil Nadu

Abstract

India is the world’s largest democracy with a population of more than 125 crores now. India has an electorate of more than 668 million and covers 543 parliamentary constituencies. Voting is the bridge between the governed and government. The recent General Elections in Indian states have caused objections by political parties on the credibility of EVMs. EVMs were introduced in India to reduce electoral scams. The objective of using electronic voting machines in India was to strengthen the electoral processes and to reduce the costs of conducting elections. It was first used in kerala elections in 1998. Following the initial success, the ECI procured 150,000 EVMs in 1990 to use them on a national scale. The objective of the paper is to study the election trends before and after the EVM in Tamil Assembly Elections. A sample of election data in 234 constituency of Tami Nadu is considered to find the fact of using EVM in Tamil Nadu Polls.
